Overview of Interac® e-Transfer

Interac® e-Transfer is rapidly becoming the preferred way for Canadians to send and receive money between accounts. Quick, convenient and secure, Interac® e-Transfer enables our members (excludes Business members) to transfer funds directly to anyone with an email address or a mobile phone number and an account at a Canadian financial institution.  With Interac® e-Transfer our members can send and receive money from either a desktop computer or web-enabled mobile device. The sender does not need to know the recipient’s financial institution or account information.  Recipients are notified by email or text message when a transfer has been sent and participating financial institutions transfer the funds using secure, established banking procedures.

Most person-to-person payment systems rely on stored value accounts that take multiple days to process the payment. An Interac® e-Transfer payment can be processed in less than 30 minutes.


The funds can be accessed immediately after the transfer is accepted.

How an Interac® e-transfer works


Sending an Interac® e-Transfer

Sandra wants to send $100 as a birthday present to her brother Ryan. She logs in to online banking on her desktop computer or via our mobile web and selects the Interac® e-Transfer link in the transfer section. Sandra enters Ryan’s information as the recipient, the amount and a security question that she is certain Ryan knows the answer to. Sandra then submits the transaction. Once the e-Transfer has been submitted, Sandra receives an email or text confirmation of her transaction.

Receiving an Interac® e-Transfer

Ryan then receives an email (and/or a text message) notifying him of a $100 Interac® e-Transfer, a birthday present from his sister Sandra. Ryan clicks on the link and is directed to an Interac® e-Transfer gateway page that contains a list of all participating financial institutions. From the list he selects his financial institution, and on the login page he enters his login credentials. After authentication, Ryan is redirected to an Interac® e-Transfer Services page and is prompted to enter the security question for the e-Transfer. He knows the answer to the question his sister selected, he enters it and quickly accepts the transfer.
