Bursaries and Awards

Grade 12 Graduation Bursaries

Summerland Credit Union has up to four $1000 bursaries available to graduating students who are planning to attend a public or private post-secondary approved program. 

Bursary Criteria:

Applicants must be graduating from Summerland Secondary, Penticton Secondary, Princess Margaret, or any other recognized public or private secondary program. In addition, applicants must:

  • Provide an interim transcript showing proof of credits toward a grade 12 graduation from a recognized secondary school
  • Be an independent member of Summerland Credit Union in good standing for a period of 6 months prior to application
  • Be less than 19 years of age at date of graduation
  • Demonstrate a financial need
  • Be involved in the community (i.e. volunteer experience)
In addition, please provide the bursary committee with the following two short essays:
  • 100 words: How does your education align with employment opportunities? 
  • 250 words: How do those employment opportunities allow you to stay in the Okanagan region?
Completed bursary applications must be submitted to the Summerland Credit Union (13601 Victoria Road North, Summerland, BC) on or before May 31st, 2018 at 5pm

The bursary committee will review all complete applications received by the deadline, taking into consideration all of the above criteria. Program approval will be at the discretion of the Summerland Credit Union Bursary Committee. All decisions are final.

Bursaries are available for a period of eighteen (18) months from the presentation date and will be paid when proof of registration at a post-secondary institution is provided. Special circumstance may be considered by the bursary committee, and if they choose to do so, the committee may extend the availability period.

The successful recipients will be requested to pose for a photo or supply us with a photo for promotional reasons. Good luck!

Summerland Secondary School

It is tremendously important to us that students nearing graduation are encouraged to continue with their post-secondary education. In addition to the above mentioned Graduation Bursaries, SDCU offers individual awards for English and Social Studies recognizing those students achieving top marks in these subjects.

Credit Union Foundation of BC - Gordon Beggs Trust

Awards are also available from the Gordon Beggs Trust through the Credit Union Foundation of BC for students attending any level of post secondary education. More information about this and other trusts and eligibility criteria are available on their website at www.cufoundation.org. Credit Union Foundation of BC - Summerland Credit Union Endowment

The Credit Union Foundation of BC commemorated its 50th Anniversary in 2008 by providing a donation on behalf of all credit union members in the province to match a donation from Summerland Credit Union to establish this endowment. The award is to be made available to BC resident students in attendance at Okanagan College on any program of study. Financial need is the prime criteria, however grades must be acceptable. The deadline for applications is September 30th of each calendar year. Adult Education Award

SDCU has up to five $1000 bursaries available to adults who are attending a Public or Private Post Secondary Approved Program.

The deadline to submit your application is December 1st, 2017. Applications are available at the Credit Union; for more information please contact our Executive Secretary, Sandy Laidman at 250-494-6052 or email: slaidman@sdcu.com.

Bursary Criteria:

  • Applicants must be enrolled or have been enrolled in a recognized educational facility during the current calendar year and be able to show proof of registration
  • Must be a member of SDCU in good standing
  • Must be 19 years of age or older
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Community involvement / Volunteer time 
  • Please provide the Committee with a brief written response to the following: personal profile; future ambitions; and financial need
  • ESSAY TOPIC: please provide the Committee with a 300-500 word essay on the following 2017 topic: In your opinion, what makes Summerland a great place to live and work? How could it be improved? If you had a magic wand, what would you change and how might that change be supported? 

The Bursary Committee will review all complete applications received by the deadline, taking into consideration all of the above criteria. Program approval will be at the discretion of the Summerland Credit Union Bursary Committee and all decisions are final.

The successful recipient(s) will be requested to pose for a photo to be used for promotional reasons.
